BIO and BACKGROUND
Oooo Mmm
We don't have no plastic L.A. friends,
ain't on the edge of no popular trend.
Ain't never seen the inside of that magazine GQ.
We don't care if you 're a lawyer, or a texas oil man,
or some waitress busting ass in some liquor stand.
If you got Soul We hang out with people just like you
My hair's turning white, my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue, we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
guess you could say we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue Oh
Ride our own bikes To Sturgis we pay our own dues,
smoking camels, drinking domestic BREWS
You want to know where I have been just look at my hands
Yeah, I've driven by the White House, Spent some time in jail.
Momma cried but she still wouldn't pay my bail.
I ain't been no angel, But even God, he understands. Yeah
My hair's turning white, my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue, we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
guess you could say we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue Yeah that's right!
My Daddy worked hard, and so have I,
paid our taxes and gave our lives to serve this great country so what are they complaining about
Yeah we love our families, we love our kids
you know it is love that makes us all so rich
That's where were at, If they don't like it they can just
GET THE HELL OUT! Yeah!
My hair's turning white, my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue, we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
My hair's turning white, my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue, we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
guess you could say we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue oh..oh..Red, White, and Blue....
You know... You know...
Red, White, and Blue. YEAHH.
oh..oh....Red, White, and Blue
Dreams of music and baseball collided in Jacksonville, Florida during the summer of 1964. Although Ronnie VanZant, Bob Burns, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Larry Junstrom developed an early forerunner of Lynyrd Skynrd that summer, for most of the players, baseball remained the star attraction.
It was the dress code at Robert E Lee High School that would go down in rock and roll history, largely because of a tough gym teacher named Leonard Skinner. In 1978, Skinner recalled, "I was a gym coach in high school for Ronnie VanZant and of the others in the band. Back in those days we had a dress code. The dress code involved sideburns not coming below the ears; hair not touching the back of the collar; belts had to be worn; shirt tails had to be in; and socks had to be worn at all times. It was among the duties of the coach to help enforce these rules and apparently one of the people, or one or more of the people, that I may have sent down were members of this band." Leonard Skinner grew into Lynard Skynard, and then finally, the band settled on Lynyrd Skynyrd.
In 1972 the band was discovered by musician, songwriter and producer Al Kooper of 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' who had attended one of their shows at a club in Atlanta.
January 1 1973, the album ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd' featured the hit song "Free Bird" reaching #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and is still considered a rock and roll anthem today.
Their fan base continued to grow throughout 1973 largely due to their opening slot on The Who's Quadrophenia tour in the United States. The 1974 follow-up ‘Second Helping’ album contained their most popular single, "Sweet Home Alabama" (#8 on the charts in August 1974), a response to Neil Young's "Alabama" and "Southern Man." (Young and Van Zant were not rivals, but fans of each other's music and good friends).
On Thursday, October 20 1977, just three days after the release of the ‘Street Survivors’ album and five shows into their most successful headlining tour to date, Lynyrd Skynyrd's chartered Convair 240 Airplane ran out of fuel near the end of their flight from Greenville South Carolina to LSU in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Though the pilots attempted an emergency landing on a small airstrip, the plane crashed in a forest in Gillsburg Mississippi. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray were all killed on impact; the other band members suffered serious injuries.
Following the crash and the ensuing press, Street Survivors became the band's second platinum album and reached #5 on the U.S. album chart. The single "What's Your Name" reached #13 on the single airplay charts in January 1978.
In 1987 and through today, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for a full-scale tour with five major members of the post-crash band: crash survivors Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle, along with guitarist Ed King, who had left the band two years before the crash. Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny took over as the new lead singer.
