BIO and BACKGROUND
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!
O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!
O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!
There is the blackness and the blindness. There was the extreme poverty; there was the segregated South into which he was born. It is music, Ray Charles' single driving force, that catapulted a poor, black, blind, orphaned teenager from there to here.
"I was born with music inside me. That's the only explanation I know of..." he remarks in his autobiography.
In 2003 Ray Charles headlined the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington DC at which President and Mrs Bush, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice were in attendance. He also presented one of his greatest admirers, Van Morrison, with his award upon being inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the two sang Morrison's song "Crazy Love". This performance is captured on Morrison's 2007 album, The Best of Van Morrison Volume 3. On Friday, April 11 2003, Ray Charles sang 'America The Beautiful' at Fenway Park in Boston, Friday, prior to the rained out Red Sox home opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
In 2003 Charles performed "Georgia On My Mind" and "America the Beautiful" at a televised annual electronic media journalist banquet held in Washington DC, at what may have been his final performance in public. His final public appearance came on April 30 2004, at the dedication of his music studio as a historic landmark in the city of Los Angeles. He passed on in June 2004 at 73 years old of liver cancer at his home in Beverly Hills California.
Ray Charles / America the Beautiful
The lyrics to this beautiful song were written by Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) an instructor at Wellesley College Massachusetts, after an inspiring trip to the top of Pikes Peak Colorado in 1893. Her poem, America the Beautiful first appeared in print in The Congregationalist, a weekly journal, on July 4 1895. Ms Bates revised the lyrics in 1904 and again in 1913. In addition to those changes in the words, it is notable that the poem was not always sung to the tune presented on this website ("Materna," composed by Samuel A. Ward in 1882 nearly a decade before the poem was written). In fact, for two years after it was written it was sung to just about any popular or folk tune that would fit with the lyrics, with "Auld Lang Syne" being the most notable of those. The words were not published together with "Materna" until 1910, and even after that time the tune to be used was challenged to some degree. For example, in 1926 the National Federation of Music Clubs held a contest to put the poem to new, reportedly "less somber" music, but no other entry was determined to be more acceptable. Before her death in 1929, Ms Bates never indicated publicly which music she liked best but it now appears likely that America the Beautiful will forever be associated with "Materna."
The Ray Charles story is full of paradoxes, part and parcel of the American Dream. Rags to riches. Triumph overcoming tragedy. Light transcending darkness. The first child of Aretha and Baily Robinson was born in Albany Georgia on September 23 1930.
The name Ray Charles is on a Star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame. There is the bronze medallion cast and presented to him by the French Republic on behalf of its people. There are the Halls of Fame: Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll... There are the many gold records and the 12 Grammys...
